High Education And Intellectual Property - 1038 Words

Higher education and intellectual property go hand in hand but not always easily. With the development of sophisticated online learning systems, copyright has become a larger and more complicated issue. Faculty members struggle to keep up with the demands of providing scholarly materials to their students while at the same time respecting the rights of the author. This article focuses on the faculty-created resources caught up in this intellectual storm, and attempts to clarify the issues by first introducing us to copyright law in a face to face classroom and an online one. Senior faculty members are now being asked to create a â€Å"package† that will be used as an outline for many sections of the same class. In other cases, many faculty members will contribute to the package over time, thus diluting the authorship. This leaves the question of ownership woefully under-defined. Faculty Survey. The authors of this paper wanted to know what faculty members thought of the convoluted idea of intellectual ownership of their works. Of the 96 respondents, the authors were surprised that only 80% believed that they owned all of the academic materials they offered in a classroom. Of the 20% who said â€Å"no† to this question, they followed up with clarification questions. Faculty were asked who the owner of copyright were in three situations: face to face classes, online classes, and peer-reviewed journals. Face to face classes were split evenly between faculty and co-ownership with the institution. For online classes over half the faculty surveyed believed that the materials they developed should be co-owned with the institution. Both type of education gives you the required degree to make progress in life. When people think of non-traditional they might think of unaccredited college or university, but that’s not what non- traditional is. Online students are considered non-traditional students because they get to do work from the comforts of their homes. Online education and traditional education are different approaches to a higher education. Online college requires students to learn time management with their education. Students have a greater responsibility because they have to manage their time wisely. Most students that do online education do it because they have jobs or a family to take care of. They will have to organize they time between jobs, family, and school. Students that chose the traditional way of education have to be on campus according to schedule. Planning around class schedule will be first option for students on campus especially if they work or have a family. For the most part, they have the advantage of experiencing the opportunity to socialize and work in groups. Even though working in groups at times can be very frustrating because of a group member not doing they part of an assignment. If assignment is not complete as a group then the grade average for the assignment will suffer because of one student not doing their part. Online schooling can be good for young adults and mature adults in many ways. They have a more direct and focused method of learning because the class size is not as large as a traditional school class. Students are able to have a more flexible schedule, because it is the responsibility of them to set a schedule that will work out for them time. Online education gives students that are parents an opportunity to be roll out of bed and not worry about the way you look to get your class work done. With the absence of diversions for online students, they tend to be more focused on the lessons taught and complete the work they are expected to do. Without having to meet the pace of other students, online students are allowed to work at their own pace, which can make students more successful. Online degrees require the same college level work and time commitment as traditional education. Students are exposed to more people from different socio-economic backgrounds. This teaches students how to get along with one another regardless of race or differences; it also can provide a more complete educational experience. Traditional education students will have a more diverse social group interaction, allowing them to get a better school experience. Attending Traditional school is also a enormous plus for students, because they are more open to gain more college scholarship opportunities than a online schooled student. By being a great sports player, band member, art student, or even entering in numerous contests such as writing funded by the government or even private spectators enhances their chances of being notice is much higher than a online student. Student still take exams, attend classes, and write papers with online education. With online learning there is no teacher to monitor the students, which the students are solely responsible for listening and learning in class. Traditional classes have the teacher/professor in class to teach them. Whether, a student chooses to attend classes in a traditional physical setting, the student will be assigned homework to complete. Online and traditional courses are expected to do a series of reading and writing assignments. Online and traditional classes have due dates for all assignments. If assignments not complete you get points taking from your score. That is why all assignments should be complete on time. Traditional and online classes will require a student to take exams. Exams are used to test student’s retention and understanding of course material. These exams are giving from time to time on common intervals, such as weekly, monthly, or quarterly. All exams are checked by the teachers provided. All exams most be passed with a passing average in order to move on to the following course. If it happens that any exams are failed and class average is below passing average, student will have to repeat that course. Also, students may have the option to take exams online, or be required to visit the campus to complete the exam. Most likely when seeking help with an assignment, traditional and online classes provide teachers/professors that can clarify doubts, and have a discussion about a topic if needed. If any assignments are misunderstood the teacher/professor is also there to answer any question or worries students may have. In both the types of classes, students will have teachers available to help in any matte. Instructors make themselves available to students to help them learn the required material on a schedule. Also teachers/professors can be a very good amazing support system. Teachers/professors will be those to push you to strive for better academic work. Whenever any assistance is needed students have the advantage to get in contact with their teacher/professor. An alternative way to get in contact with your teacher is by e-mail or phone if it was provided. Through the years the means of getting an education has slowly changed. Many students today are deciding to do online schooling. Although most people think that traditional education is better, most statistics and facts tend to show that online education is beneficial in more ways. Students will learn and get an education no matter what method they choose online or traditional education. Some may like a more competitive environment, and some may like a laid back environment. The option lies within them to choose what suits them best. With so many advantages and disadvantages between online and traditional education, the option lies within the student. Everyone is destined to be someone in life and it starts by getting an education. How to cite Online vs Traditional Education, Essay examples

San Jose Museum Of Art Essay Example For Students

San Jose Museum Of Art Essay The San Jose Museum of Art is nicely decorated and furnished museum with many different types of art. I decided to start out by looking at some of the various paintings. There were many different kinds, including traditional oil paintings on canvas as well as ordinary paper. One that stood out in my mind was Desert Restaurant by John Register. Its a painting of the inside of a diner sitting in the middle of an open desert. The picture gives an eerie sense of isolation. One sculpture that I remember was one by Oliver Jackson, which is untitled. The sculpture appears to be a figure of a human squatting down. The sculpture is made out of Steel, Marble, and Crayon. Besides these, there were many other interesting pieces of art in the Museum including the unique bright chandeliers made of blown glass. I read an article in an old issue of Art in America about the lack of interest many young Americans show toward art in recent years. The article went on to explain how museum attendance was down in most museums compared to 20 years ago. Their main reasoning for this was the basic arguments of the advances in other forms of technology such as Television and computers that draw the attention of young ones away from traditional arts such as museums and live plays. The article went on to say that plays have become more for the highly sophisticated and less for the average person. The average person views a live play as any normal television show and doesnt recognize the culture aspect attached to it. (Art in America, Fading Culture 1991, 12-14) The San Jose Museum of Art held a lot of interesting types of art, but I think I can understand what the article I read in Art in America was saying. Art has not changed much over time. Art takes a higher level of appreciation and educational level to be truly understood and enjoyed. To many this takes more work and time than they would like to invest, especially while there are other forms of entertainment that are cheaper and faster. Reading the article helps the reader to see the side of the more sophisticated art lover despite most being on the opposite end of the spectrum.

Privatization in India free essay sample

Ram Mohan Visiting Faculty, Finance and Accounting Area Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad, India Abstract The proposed research is intended to survey the process of privatization in India and assess its impact on the Indian economy. The central issue we will address is the impact of privatization that has taken place so far on profitability and performance of PSUs. Going beyond this, we will attempt to understand what explains the impact of privatization on performance. Is it the use of market power by oligopolistic firms whose pricing power had been constrained under government ownership ? Is performance bought at the expense of labour through extensive layoffs so that what we see is essentially a transfer from workers to shareholders ? Or are we confusing the impact of privatization with the more generalised impact of deregulation in the economy, which in itself could spur efficiency ? The research output will comprise the following: 1. A survey of the literature on privatization, particularly with respect to less developed countries. We will write a custom essay sample on Privatization in India or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page 2. A review of the role of the public sector in the Indian economy, and the process of economic liberalization and privatization in India upto this point. 3. Impact of privatization on firm performance. 4. Explanation for the impact of privatization 5. Assessment of mechanisms of corporate governance in India. -2- I. Background: privatization in theory and practice A great wave of privatization has swept the world in the past two decades, embracing the industrial economies, the transition economies of East Europe and large parts of the less developed world, and it continues to roll on. It is interesting, however, that its basis in theory was somewhat shaky to start with. Moreover, a sizable enough body of empirical evidence, on which hypotheses about its impact could be tested, became available only several years down the road. So much of the initial impetus to privatization entailed a leap in faith, and, as happens all too often in the development of knowledge, attempts to explain its impact have followed on the heels of widespread existing practice. Privatization In india free essay sample Privatisation, also spelled privatization, may have several meanings. Primarily, it is the process of transferring ownership of a business, enterprise, agency, public service, or public property from the public sector (a government) to the private sector, either to a business that operates for a profit or to a nonprofit organization. It may also mean government outsourcing of services or functions to private firms, e. g. revenue collection, law enforcement, and prison management. Privatization has also been used to describe two unrelated transactions. The first is the buying of all outstanding shares of a publicly traded company by a single entity, making the company privately owned. This is often described as private equity. The second is a demutualization of a mutual organization or cooperative to form a joint-stock company ? Definition of Privatization 1) The transfer of ownership of property or businesses from a government to a privately owned entity. 2) The transition from a publicly traded and owned company to a company which is privately owned and no longer trades publicly on a stock exchange. We will write a custom essay sample on Privatization In india or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page When a publicly traded company becomes private, investors can no longer purchase a stake in that company. 3)The process in which a publicly-traded company is taken over by a few people is also called privatization. The stock of the company is no longer traded in the stock market and the general public is barred from holding stake in such a company. EXAMPLE: If an individual or organization purchases all the stock in a publicly-traded company, that effectively makes it private, so that process is sometimes described as privatization. However, in contrast to the primary understanding of privatization, the company in question is in the private sector to begin with and remains there. Features of Privatization Espousing market principles by public policy makers has evolved as one of the prominent characteristics of the contemporary public enterprise management which encompasses privatization as a primary facet. Privatization of State- owned enterprises has developed as a critical tool for economic policies pertaining to progress and development of developing countries. One of the prominent feature of privatization is the enhanced competitive characteristics it provides to the enterprises which prove to be fruitful for the business as well as the country. However, privatization contracts are greatly influenced by merger variables and even global issues and are structured on the basis of manipulation of the government and the private players along with the administering jurisdiction.

Yellow tail wine Essays

Yellow tail wine Essays Yellow tail wine Paper Yellow tail wine Paper In the US wine industry, Casella Wines created Yellow Tail, a new wine that broke away from competition and created a new market. They did not simply offer wine as an expensive drink but rather as a social drink available to all kinds of drinkers and consumers: cocktail, beer and other drinkers of non-wine beverages. In Just two years, Yellow Tail became the quickest growing brand in the histories of Australian and U. S. wine industries and is the most imported wine in the U. S. Yellow Tail surpassed its big competitors without campaigning, big broadcasting or major advertising. Other large wine businesses, on the other hand, took years of investment and advertising to create well-established brands. It not only took customers away from competitors but also expanded the market with more than 6 million new customers that consisted of non-wine drinkers (beer and cocktail drinkers). Furthermore, new wine consumers began to drink on a more regular basis and luxurious wine consumers started drinking Yellow Tail. Casella Wines developed new features in the U. S. wine industry by looking at the substitutes of beer and cocktails and looking at non-customers point of view. It created a wine that was easily selectable by anyone, along with being fun and adventurous. The wine company fgured out that the majority of Americans turned down wine due to the fact that they couldnt appreciate its alternative taste. For instance, beer and cocktails were sweetened and easier to drink. As a result, Yellow Tail emerged as a completely new category that combined some wine characteristics with a simple structure. It was instantaneously attractive to alcohol drinkers as a whole. It tasted soft and had strong flavors, with hints of fruitiness, allowing consumers to enjoy more than one glass of wine. This resulted in a simple wine that could be appreciated by anyone. Along with its sweet fruity flavor, Yellow Tail differed from other wines by getting rid of many features that were commonly competed on, including the need for ageing. This in turn reduced the working capital needed and created faster returns for the wines created. Although Yellow Tail was dramatically criticized by the wine industry for its fruity taste, which apparently lowered the quality and proper appreciation for wine, its sales spoke otherwise. In the U. S. , consumers felt overwhelmed and intimidated by the wide variety of wines offered. The wine bottles all resembled each other, the labels explaining how the wines were made was only understandable by experienced wine buyers, and the wide variety of wines from which to select was so wide that the sellers were equally disadvantaged in helping and recommending wines to customers. Yellow Tail fixed these problems by reducing the selection of wine offered. It developed only two types of wine: Chardonnay (a white wine) and Shiraz (a red wine). Their labels are consumer friendly and uncomplicated because they carry a simple design, which is a brand rather than an explanation about the rapes, soil, or aging process, used. They are prominent and striking ones presenting bright cultured Australian wallabies (kangaroo) on black backgrounds. They create an eye-catching display for wine. Moreover, simply offering two wines from the beginning (a red and a white) gave Casella Wines a quick start. It allowed them to offer both wines in the same shaped bottles, which simplified manufacturing and industry around the world was pleased to provide a new distilled drink. The appealing packaging, combined with the decent quality of the wines and the low rice ($7), proved to be a masterstroke. Undeniably, the strategies used by the big wine companies in the industry were targeted for the higher income bracket consumers, with billions invested in marketing and branding. However, by regarding the non-consumers, Yellow Tail discovered that this exclusive picture did not appeal and apply to the main population, who found it unapproachable. Yellow Tail thus moved away from this image and shaped a personality that reflected the Australian culture: boldness, adventure and fun, Just like the bottles and striking labels themselves.

Primary Source analysis Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Primary Source analysis - Essay Example Before our modern, liberating era, the world had no room for independent women. A little more than a century ago, women were property and were like slaves, being only allowed to do what their husbands demanded of them. They lived under the rule of their husbands and fathers, unable to escape from the shadows of men. The concept of an independent woman was nothing other than a myth, a dream that was more of a fantasy than anything conceivable. Though they were not allowed in schools, colleges, the majority of professions, or in any offices of government, Elizabeth Cady Stanton pointed out that these women were lacking something even more important, which was â€Å"no proper appreciation of themselves as factors in civilization.†1 Women were not only viewed as less than human, with men considered them to be lower than males, but it was a position that they allowed and accepted. When women today realize what they are capable of and allowed to engage in, it becomes almost baffling to remember that the majority of these options were not acceptable to women in a world that existed only a hundred years ago. Even in Stanton’s article, she acknowledges that a time would come when women can enjoy the rights of person and property. Yet despite this optimism, a stance that has proven itself real in our present day and age, Stanton still states that â€Å"the true woman is as yet a dream of the future†2. Since the post-Civil War era, women became increasingly more free. But is there still more for women to discover about themselves and their abilities? Stanton seemed to believe so. In Stanton’s words, â€Å"we have a government of the people, by the people, for the people [...] we soon shall have that important half, called women ...†3. Women of Stanton’s day and age did not have the freedom that we do now, yet even she was optimistic that one day women would be considered just as vital to society as men. Regardless of the life that Stanton herself led

Wind Load Effects on Skyscrapers Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3750 words

Wind Load Effects on Skyscrapers - Essay Example These devices are utilised in high-rise buildings reaching above 50 storeys. The TMDs enhance strength of the building while increasing comfort of residents. The Taipei 101 structure remains the building with the largest TMD weighing over six tons. This massive structure was constructed using advanced technology providing a significant breakthrough for the engineering industry. The massive structure has contributed towards the capacity for the building to withstand numerous typhoons, common in Asia. In many modern cities around the world, skyscrapers have continued to dominate the skylines. The construction of these structures continues to define the element of modernisation and evolvement of modern city designs. These magnificent structures decorating the skylines of major cities require a considerable amount of planning before commencing construction. The planning for construction of skyscrapers begins with consideration of various elements among them cost, economic efficiency and strength of the structure(Chew, 2001). The element of strength remains most important as it relates to safety of the tenants and other occupants of the building. The strength of a skyscraper remains the determinant element for the successful construction of these high rise structures. These structures remain highly susceptible to natural calamities like earth quakes and hurricanes, among others. During the planning phase for the construction of these high rise structures, those designing components seek to ensure the structure becomes sufficiently resistant to any forces that might arise. The consideration of these wind forces makes the designing phase most important. The forces exerted by winds on the structures remain fundamental for designing of high-rise structures. WIND AND TUNED MASS DAMPER Wind remains a complex phenomenon because of the variations in wind speeds resulting from interaction with the structures surrounding the wind. Wind comprises of numerous particles moving in different directions. The speed and direction of wind contributes immensely towards the effects produced by the wind(Holmes, 2007). During construction of tall structures, engineers and architects must consider the expected wind effects upon the intended structure. While normal wind force could be resisted by many structures, extreme cases like tornadoes, hurricanes present great challenges as they create massive forces, capable of collapsing entire buildings. The resulting effects of wind damage can cause massive destruction as have been recorded. Hurricanes, for example, are some of the most feared winds across the globe. Some hurricanes have enough strength to even uproot trees and destroy even the shortest of structures. During these extreme wind cases, like winds measuring 10 or higher on the Beaufort scale, the wind load affecting tall buildings is normally higher

ART - Essay Example It is usually ornamental, emphasized pointed arches, flying buttresses, and elaborates tracery. An example of this art is the adoration of the Magi from Strasbourg Cathedral. International Gothic followed in the year c.1375 and c. 1425. This style of painting, sculpture, and decorating arts brought a change in the style of figures and their compositions. In this period, most arts represented some animals in a statue pose and had a better facial expression. Their sizes were smaller and arranged more freely to fit the available space. Some figure appeared elongated and with sensuous qualities. The paintings were distinct from the former period from their elegance, delicate nature, and were natural. An example includes Simon Martini’s piece in the period between 1285 and 1344. Neo Gothic art is the latest form with the earliest pieces coming in the 1980s. The style emphasized on bizarre, sex, obscene, mysteries, horror, and some form of confusion. It explores the world of fantasy. The art is common in Canada, Europe, Japan, Russia, and US. Network User Problems

Network User Problems Tiago Garcia Mourà £o (13265) a) Credential, Permission and Rights Problems The user can have this kind of problem when tries to access/alter a host, folder or document and is not able to because they cannot log in, or they do not have that permission. Network Performance If the user or LAN administrator wants to use a wireless connection, it will drastically impact the network communication. This happens because today home-based wireless systems will not produce more than about 54-100 Mbps of transfer. And using a hub instead of a network switch can cause major issues with speed and latency, which means low performance network. TCP/IP Conflicts There are many reasons why this can be an issue, but the most common happens when at least two devices are trying to use the same IP address in the same network. b) By the morning, an user that works in a company, tries to logon into the Windows operational system using the network credentials given by the Network Administrator. But he gets the following error: The relationship between this device and the domain failed. The user tries to restart the computer and logon again, but gets the same error. c) Network Performance If you are using a corporate network, make sure that you are not streaming or downloading music, video or whatever else while working. By doing that, you will be impacting the network performance and like it will make IP phone calls and file sharing, per example, really slow. The Network Administrator has to find a way to lock down this kind of problems, like blocking music/video streaming and files downloads. TCP/IP Conflicts When the Network Administrator faces problems like IP conflicts into the network, the easiest way to fix it would be releasing and renewing the device IP and try to use it again. d) Knowledge base form Name of the company TGM Inc Clients Name Ilson Neves Date and time 01/12/2015 2:50 PM Problem Detail: Users are complaining about devices IP conflicts every day during the usual work. When users try to access the folder/document in the server, they can get errors like Not authorized access or The file is being used. Data Backup An important action related to fileservers is the backup. The most of companies have files that need to be accessed many times per day and by different users, no matter what. b) A company user created a shared folder on the network to allow other department users read and edit documents. After adding these documents, other users tried to open the documents, but they got the following error: Windows cannot access the document. You do not have the permission to access the document. Contact your Network Administrator to request access. The users restarted the PCs and tried to access the documents again, but still got the same error. c) File Sharing If the users cannot access shared folders or alter shared folders, the Network Administrator has to check the reason. The first step is checking if the folder/file owner has shared it. Otherwise, only him will be able to access it. If it have been done, the next step is checking if the file is being used by another user. After that, the folders/files have to be available for the allowed users in the network. Data Backup If the server crashes or the file is deleted by mistake, the Network Administrator has to get the last backup version as soon as possible, no matter what. d) Knowledge base form Name of the company MG Enterprise Clients Name Carlos Silva Date and time 01/09/2016 4:30 PM Problem Detail: Users are complaining that they cannot access or alter any folders or files into the fileserver. Then, I checked that the folders and files sharing option were OK. And the last step was include all the desired users to the sharing list. After that, I tested all the PCs and all of them were able to access the folders and files. Because of that, the data delays can bring the transfer performance down. Memory (RAM) The data transfer over the network does not need much system memory usage, but can affect the performance of other OS components. If the system memory is too low, the system has to access the HD more often, and the writing/reading disk performance will be low as well. b) Every week a company leaders need to make a videoconference with another branch for a brainstorm. Both branches use Skype for it, but they are having some problems related to the network. The connection is very slow and the call crashes, even if the computer is connected to the internet using the wire. c) Memory (RAM) In order to increase the network data transfer, the user can add more RAM memory to the laptop/PC, making the writing/reading disk faster and avoiding the HD access. Wireless If the user wants to increase the wireless connection performance, the best ways would be getting closer to the Access Point to get a high quality connection or buying a better Access Point, if possible to support more users at the same time. d) Knowledge base form Name of the company GT Ltd Clients Name Bruno Souza Date and time 01/02/2017 8:50 AM Problem Detail: The users are complaining that the wireless connection is too slow and sometimes crashes. The most important part of the tool is the core and it allows you to build plugins to monitor particular elements. It has a large-scale use. Zenoss This software was created to monitor server, storage, applications, networks and virtual servers. Monitis Focused on small or medium-sized companies, this application can arise as a great network tool. Pandora FMS Its capable of monitoring over 10,000 nodes and monitors servers, networks and applications. It has many alerts, reports and third party integrations, etc. Its network autodiscovery system can find all the network elements in a short time. Zabbix Its known for being easy to configure and for having a very powerful GUI. It has agentless monitoring service can monitor up to 10,000 nodes without performance issues. 2.2 Install network monitoring tools: According to the figure below, during an average websites usage at 3PM, the total traffic size was 4.24MB, the transfer rate was 136.942Kbps and the packets amount was 9,384 (474.000 bytes): (Figure 01: Capsa Free software Summary tab) (Figure 02: Capsa Free software Dashboard tab) After few minutes, a new Youtube tab was opened at 3:03 PM and then the total traffic size was 35.15MB, the transfer rate was 531.204Kbps and the packets amount was 50,292 (732.000bytes), according to the figure below: (Figure 03: Capsa Free software Summary tab) (Figure 04: Capsa Free software Dashboard tab) 2.3 Analyse the bandwidth information: According to the figures above, the usage of network didnt reach its limits. The maximum usage that it reached during the tests was 0.053% of the bandwidth. 2.4 Explain different techniques for LAN performance: Watch everything Users often complain about the network performance, but the most of times, the network has nothing to do with it. One of the best techniques to improve the LAN performance is monitor everything, from network latency and throughput, to CPU and RAM utilization. Monitoring the switches and routers, the network error rates and configuring some logfiles alerts will make the network faster. Know your apps The network is always being consumed by the applications. Even being hard to see exactly what is going on, is possible observing their effects on the infrastructure. The best way to keep your network performance is testing the software in a testing environment before purchasing/installing it in the infrastructure and check the amount of resources is being used. 3.1 Identify and explain security exposures and violations: Former Employees Attacks coming from inside the network are one of the biggest threats to a corporate network. Former employees, especially from IT department, that have the networks, admin accounts and data centers access can spread/sell this information or even hack the company. Careless Employees An employee that forgets files or the cellphone/laptop inside a taxi cab or on a restaurant table could allow a malicious person to use this information or sell it to competitor companies. 3.2 Determine the possible solutions for the CVE: Former Employees In order to avoid this kind of danger, when an employee is about to be dismissed, the Information Security Analyst or the Network Administrator has to fill out a form describing all the access rights to be revoked(systems, servers, data centers, etc) and ask to an analyst do it. Careless Employees Information stealing is one of the most dangerous ways to get corporate information leaked. To avoid it, employees must look after classified documents, cellphones, laptops, etc and keep it safe. Electronic devices must have passwords, per example. 4.1 The sender in a LAN sends 10110110; a hacker alters the data and the receiver receives 10100110. Dustin (Narration) Essay -- essays research papers

Composition One: Narration   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  I can remember receiving the news like it was yesterday even though it feels like a lifetime since I last heard Dustin’s high pitched laugh. It’s still hard for me to talk about his suicide.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Even though Dustin had angelic features, such as light green eyes, dark blonde hair, and a smile that would get him out of anything, he was no angel. I remember the time he shot the windows of the bus with his B.B. gun or the time he put a flower in the ditch then gave it to the bus driver. He wasn’t too fond of the bus driver.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  He was always the first to try something new. when we went to San Antonio for vacation, there was a cliff that over looked the water and we were all scared to jump. Well, everyone except Dustin that is. I guess that’s the ironic part of his death, he was the first person almost everyone at school knew who had committed suicide.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  It was no later than 10:30 when, I was sitting in my Health class. I just opened the Health book, was flipping through the pages and I wasn’t paying much attention to Coach Andree’ when the intercom came on. â€Å"Coach Andree’,† the secretary announced. â€Å"Yes,† he answered. â€Å"Would you please send Dara Wilson to check out?† â€Å"Sure will.† he responded.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  I got up, packed my bag, and started walking out. I smiled at my friend Beau who said â€Å"you’re so lucky.† I had no clue why I was checking out, but I knew something wasn’t right. I started thinking of all the bad things that could have possibly gone wrong. I knew my brother went out the night before and he hadn’t come home when we left for school that morning, so I was worried about that. Maybe something had happened to him was all that was racing through my mind. I didn’t even notice that Dustin was absent that day. I walked up the hall to the office, a walk that was prolonged by the impatience of my curiosity. I wanted to know why I was leaving, especially so early in the school day. When I got to the office, I saw my Nanny Lisa there, all I could think was something was wrong with my mom or dad. I could read the sadness on the secretaries faces. Nanny Lisa was facing towards them and all I could see was her wavy fire red h air. Once she realized I was behind her, she turned to me and said the words that cha... ... a prayer for him and his family. It was a great amount of people in that hall, but not even one-fourth of the amount of people they had at the wake.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The wake was held two days later. There were hundreds of people, I never even realized how many people he had affected. Dustin’s family insisted on an open casket, to show all the children the effects of suicide, the reality of suicide. It was the saddest experience of my life. I didn’t feel as though I lost a friend, I felt like I had lost a family member.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  I once thought of suicide when I was depressed, but I have now seen the tolls that suicide takes on loved ones. I now realize that life is precious and I realize that all actions have consequences. Dustin was always the first to try something new, different, or scary. His death helped me grow up, and stop being as superficial. It helped me change my opinions on suicide. I once thought of it as an only escape from life or hard times. I now see that suicide only causes more problems. I now realize that suicide is the most selfish act a person could do. Dustin taught me that and I wish I could thank him personally for that.

DBQ on differences in Han and Roman attitudes towards technology Essay

The Chinese attitude towards technology was that it should be useful to and help the common people. The Roman attitude towards technology was that it was it was of little prestige and didn’t relate to the upper classes and was therefore of less importance. Documents 1, 2, 3, and 4 all have a positive attitude towards technology and that it should be useful to and help the common people. In document 1, it talks about preventing flood prevention, selecting a person as chief hydraulic engineer, ordering inspections of the waterways, and supplying enough workers to those who are to carry out the repair work. This shows that the Han cared about the common people. In document 2, it talks about the tools and how when they were produced by the families they were well made, but when they were produced by the state using convict labor, they were more crude and not very functional, showing that the Han cared about how well the tools are working. In document 3, it talks about the technology and how its improved. In document 4, it talks about Tu shih and how he loved the common people and wished to save their labor. It talks about the water-powered blowing-engine and how it helped the common people, showing how the Han wanted the technology to help the common people. In documents 5,6,7, and 8 the all had a negative attitude towards technology was that it was of little importance and didn’t relate to the upper classes so it was therefore of less importance. Keep in mind before that all these documents are written by upper Roman officials and leaders, therefore losing the voice of the lower classes and how they felt about technology. In document 5, it shows a negative attitude towards technology and says that the craftsmen’s occupations are vulgar and unbecoming. In document 6, it talks about how a Roman political leader in the second-century B.C.E and how he was anxious about road building, and paying attention to detail, and the person who wrote the passage was a high official from the first century C.E. In document 7, an upper-class Roman philosopher talks about how he doesn’t care about what inventions came first and that they were invented by people with a nimble and sharp mind, but not great or elevated, showing how they thought that using technology was beneath them. In the hans point of view, they care about the common people and the technology, and the Romans point of view (without the common people’s input) is negative towards technology. Out of these documents, I would like to have a journal from a roman commoner in the first century  B.C.E. or C.E. to fully understand how the majority of the people in Rome felt.

Explain The Skills And Personal Qualities Essays

Explain The Skills And Personal Qualities Essays Explain The Skills And Personal Qualities Essay Explain The Skills And Personal Qualities Essay Explain the skills and personal qualities required for command and control MM Assess the skills required for given practical command and control scenarios and compare these to own performance Lot is very important in the public services that we see many skills and qualities from a personnel to show that they have command and control Olin this presentation I have used three skills and three qualities, describe them, giving an example and then giving a real life scenario in which I have undergone. Communication Skill Communications is the passing on of information wrought multiple ways such as speaking or writing. [Gigged communication is needed as they will be expected to talk and listen to members of the public or co owe saw a good example of communication in the Coppers Series 1 Episode 2 Traffic video where one the Police officers had to go in and speak to an elderly man who had not so long ago lost his partner due to a car collision. C]The police officer went into the situation using the best type of immunization for the scenario showing sympathy and empathy towards the person. Cities shows that he understands how important his choice of communication was in this situation. Real life scenario 01 used communication a lot when doing command and control tasks, one example of this was the Paper Bridge task which involved myself stepping up and talking to all my team members and getting out the best possible decisions on how to tackle it. AS I have a lot of experience took control of the situation along with two others and by communicating with each other and the whole team we came up with the quickest bridge that was also ere stable too. Discipline Skill Sideswiping is the ability to obey and follow rules with punishments being handed out if disobeyed. L] Being disciplined and enthusiastic are needed as you will not be watched under a close eye so will be expected to follow the rules set out whilst out doing their job. Eave many different types of objectives to complete in any environment Cliche the police Dog handling team came in an visited us with their dogs the officers showed a lot of discipline but so did the dogs. Following every order they were given, sticking close to their officer and using their training to tackle the tasks they were even. C]The officers showed that through discipline they alongside their dogs could go into any situation and do what they have been trained to do. C]An example of where I ha ve used this in real life situations would be drill. Drill is done every Wednesday involving numerous calls that we would do as a team with everyone performing them together following the orders that have been given to use exactly. C]Some of the orders given would that such as parade, at ease, fallout and more. Teamwork Skill Ahoy have to be able to work with a team when completing an objective with full co-operation, communication and control. Cities must have full trust in each other, and also understand each others body language and instructions. They must be ready for any type of emergency such as car crashes or burning buildings taking the lives of many into mind. 1 saw an example of this when watching the Coppers Series 1 Episode 2 Traffic C] Which showed the Police working with the traffic cops and ambulance service to help deal with a car collision which involved a van. Cite three forces worked together efficiently and effectively to take control of the situation and ensure that all casualties were being dealt with and that t he wreckage was being cleared. Socialist every single command and control task I have done has involved teamwork, one that stands out the most is when the Royal Logistic Corps came in to take a few tasks. C]One of the tasks required us to wear blind folds with one person in charge and to work together to complete the task as quickly as we could with the blindfolds on; listening to the commands given to use by our leader and putting our full trust into them Confidence Personal Quality Ahoy will have to make decisions at a quick time with all confidence behind your decision this will also require mental agility, so a leader has to always be on is game, he will always give out the best decisions to the team taking everything in mind. C] They must be able to give out clear, decisive instructions in any crisis or environment knowing with full confidence in themselves. Owen watching the Coppers Series 1 Episode 5 Public Order video you see this demonstrated a lot, mainly when visiting the riots where they dont have much time to stop and think over what they are going to do. C] This means that when they are being hit and attacked they have full confidence that what they do next will be justified as they have gone through the training ND know the rules so the confidence within themselves to go out and do their jobs is high. C]When on the Army trip I went on for a week I was undergoing an assault course which really didnt want to do as a lot of it involved heights which I am very intimated by. C]But by talking to my team and the officers they helped me build my confidence to a point where I wanted to get on the course and do as best as I could. L]Because of my confidence I was able to take on the course and also help others out who didnt have much confidence. Integrity Personal Quality Celebrity is having strong moral ethics and honesty, his an extremely important quality that is a must have in the public services as you are working with the public, criminals or suspects on a daily basis. Cities means that they will constantly be trusted to go out and deliver the law and enforce it, doing so morally, fairly and justified without a close watch over them. C]When on parole, Police Officers are always expected to show integrity, they will be expected to do their job knowing that at the end of the day they have done it to the book and could easily justify every decision they made. Ahoy will see this a lot when in riots where the Police Officers will be expected to be able to justify their actions such as when it was necessary for them to use force. C]When I was completing the lap circuit we were not closely watched by any of the tutors so were expected to do it ourselves. Was in charge of the situation and even though we had the option the exaggerate our time or miss a corner, I made sure this was not the case and that we all ran the race fairly and honestly, as we would never benefit from it. Empathy Personal Quality [Empathy is the ability to put yourself in someone elses shoes, understanding and sharing their feelings. Empathy is needed as you will always be put in situations where someone may have lost a family member or had on seriously injured, by being empathetic you can help them and co-operate with them better as it shows you understand what they are going through and that you just want to help C]As discretion can also be linked to empathy, for example being able to decide wherever or not you need to be detained as of how they interpret the law. Awe an example Of discretion when watching Coppers Series 1 Episode 4 Saturday Night which shows on numerous occasions the police officers using their discretion and empathy to decide to not sock someone up as they understand that you just want to go out and have a drink and that no one wants to end up in jail, so instead give out warnings such as sending people home. Owen completing the laps around the pitch a few people on my team did not want to run as they felt ill or were injured. C]However, if we did not fill their places then we wouldnt of been able to complete the activity so after speaking to them could see they really didnt want to do it for many reasons such as fitness. 01 felt bad for them as they felt they were letting the team down so I and another stepped Out to take their position.

GUISEPPE MAZZINI essays

GUISEPPE MAZZINI essays The Italian nationalist Guiseppe Mazzini was considered not only a patron saint for his revolutionary actions, but a main character for laying the foundation for the unification of Italy. Guiseppes background, accomplishments, and his problems all contributed to his success as one of the most famous revolutionaries of Italy. Mazzini was born in 1805 in Genoa and died at the age of 67 in 1872. His teenage years were spent studying literary and philosophical studies. His literary style was remarkably fine. He wrote on politics, social science, philosophy, and literature. He was enrolled in the University of Genoa at the age of 14. He soon joined the Carboni. This group was a secret society that flourished in Italy, who originated in the kingdom of Naples in 1808. He was temporarily held in prison for revolutionary actions when he was a member of the Carboni, but he fled into exile. His accomplishments started at a very young age. He first developed a name for himself by becoming the founder of the revolutionary secret society Young Italy, which led a strong campaign for Italian unity under a republican government. Through his many ideas and writings he became a model of national sentiments. One of his most successful published books was The Duties of Man. This book explained that there was a hierarchy of duty, which showed God as first priority, Nation, and your family. During Mazzinis exile he had been condemned to death in Absentia. During the uprising States of Milan, the Papal States, and the Two Sicilies, Mazzini returned to Italy secretly to avoid death and took a position as a revolutionary leader of the Roman Empire. Mazzini had also advocated a mass revolt to force the Austrians and the papacy out of power. Many lost their lives, but were still inspired by his teachings and writings. Although Guiseppe had many victories, he also had many problems. He his impor ...

CORPORATE FINANCE - ASSIGNMENT Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

CORPORATE FINANCE - ASSIGNMENT - Essay Example mpany is evident and the company has declared a relatively high dividend of 57p per share in the year 2008 which is a significant improvement as far as last 3 year dividends declared are concerned. All in all, our mathematical method of computing WACC suggests that GSK is highly inclined towards debt financing, which is a prime reason behind the increment in WACC. We also conclude the fact that floating interest rate due to the current economic condition reduces the WACC and also consider the company’s performance which reflects on the net income which ultimately reflects on the dividends declared. It is prime evidence of the fact that the management takes all necessary measures to reduce the cost of doing business which is a major consideration for any and every business. The operating, investing and financing activities of a company are very handy and useful information for the users of financial infrmation, such as creditors, investors, financial analysts, etc, because these activities change the financial position of the company. Let us now look upon some of the important activities that make some impression on GSK’s financial position. GSK’s management has adopted sound business strategies in order to ensure smooth and efficient running of its operational activities. These strategies have expanded the cash generation from operations to  £ 9,055m in the year 2008 in comparison to previous years. The reason behind this high figure of  £9,055 million are the two reclassifications; the cash generated from operations is  £106 million lower than that given in GSK’s unaudited or projected accounts issued on 5th February 2009. Also keeping in view that drop-off in liquid investments for the current year has been reclassified from financing activities to investing activities. Some accounting heads that create changes in the trade payables may have been a result of the growth of products that the company introduced. GSK management computes inventories on a

Assignment #4 Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words

Assignment #4 - Essay Example M butterfly’s criticisms range from arguments or debates over illustration of sexualities and ethnicity, orientalism politics, theatre and performance theories, and lastly the masquerade concept. As such, this essay will explore and analyze the production of M. Butterfly and how it represents Asia through the story, scenic design, costume design, movement, sound, and lights. Three synchronized actors perform a splendid kabuki style dance during the opening scene of the play m butterfly. Their enticing precise movements are elaborately done. Also, their Asian themed masks, makeup and robes are all evident. Just as Asians are stereotyped to be feminine, the actors have a delicate characteristic in their movements. The western nations have a long standing stereotype that depicts Asians as exhibiting a feminine personality unlike their western counterparts who are seen as being more masculine. Additionally, the play depicts the notion of the submissive Asian woman. M Butterfly presents a fictionalized story of a French diplomat who was in a relationship with an Asian, specifically Chinese singer for more than twenty years without actually knowing that his beautiful obedient and submissive lover was actually a male. Gallimard views himself as being clumsy when it comes to love. However, he considers himself to be blessed since he has a devoted beautiful and exotic woman (Liling Song). Hwang employs the term oriental in the play to refer to how the Asians are deemed to be exotic by the west. Unknown to him, Liling is a Chinese spy whose intent was to manipulate Gallimard by extracting information from him concerning the Vietnam War. Hwang in an interview quipped that he was basically interested in the different ways he would create and showcase total theatre. He insisted that he preferred theatre which uses different mediums at his disposal to create keep the audience glued to the play (Hwang et al, 1989). To do this, he incorporated

Although different interventional strategies exist, there seems to be increase in readmission, and numbers of CHF continue to go up. This calls for identification and innovation of more suitable intervention strategies that give appropriate results. In this perspective, educational interventional strategies have been identified as the primary strategies that can be used to reduce prevalence of CHF. With education, patients, together with stakeholders involved, are likely to acquire knowledge, skills, tools, and experiences that in long-term are likely to be beneficial in promoting awareness of CHF, hence contributing to management. This research proposal provides for educational interventional strategy and explores the effectiveness of the strategy. In addition, planning, implementation, evaluation, and decision-making processes are evaluated and analyzed, hence their efficacy in contributing to success of educational programs. On overall, for educational programs to promote awareness about CHF, the research proposes for adoption of integrated educational interventional strategy that also facilitates consultation and participation. These aspects make educational interventional strategy appear as the most efficient way of addressing the rising cases of CHF. Utilization Research for Congestive Heart Failure Education Program Background Cases of the heart failing to perform effectively have become more prevalent and pronounced in the modern world. As a result, a medical condition known as heart failure, which is believed to affect many people in USA, has emerged (Heart Failure Society of America, 2011). Heart failure (HF) is today viewed to be an important public health issue that faces the health care system. Heart failure, popularly known as the congestive heart failure (CHF), can be described as a condition where the sufferer is unable to experience sufficient blood flow in the heart, which in turn makes it difficult to meet the physiological needs of the body (Chen and Zieve, 2011). Causes of heart failure are myriad but can be connected to issues of lifestyle and dietary, as well as medications. Although the prevalence of heart failure problems are today more pronounced in the society, it has been observed that majority of people wh o have been affected by the disease are still unaware of the condition (Heart Failure Society of America, 2011). This has largely been associated with lack of knowledge many sufferers have, where symptoms associated with the disease are mistaken for normal signs of advancing in the age (Heart Failure Society of America, 2011). For instance, HF is associated with signs like feeling tired and experiencing frequent short breath, which majority of older patients may think constitutes signs of their advancing age. Therefore, this calls for effective diagnosis, which will help in determining the disease in an individual and subsequently being able to determine the course of treatment and management of the disease. The prevalence of the disease is more pronounced in the modern world, and this has led to accelerated efforts aimed at identifying the best methods that can be used to treat and manage the medical condition. Coraline Essy Essay Example for Free

Coraline Essy Essay In response to the school boards request for student feedback, I am writing to express my opinion about which should be used to teach about the Fantasy genre, Coraline the book or Coraline the movie. In my opinion, I believe that Coraline the movie should be used in schools to teach the Fantasy genre. This is because the sounds, animations, and new characters all show more elements and examples of the Fantasy genre than in the book. By the time you finish reading this, you will surely end up being persuaded that Coraline the movie has more elements and examples of Fantasy than in the book. The first detail that makes Coraline the movie have more elements of Fantasy is animation. The animations in the movie were cartoon people, which means the characters dont necessarily have to do things real people can do. Another element of animation that makes the movie more fantastical is that you can see exactly what the character is doing but in the book it is Just your imagination. Also, in the movie, special effects can be added to make the scenes look more fantastical. Overall, the animations from the movie show more elements of fantasy than in the book. Secondly, the new and different characters in the movie make Coraline the movie have more elements of fantasy than the book. In the movie, the other mother turns the other dad into a pumpkin instead of a blob. This is more fantastical because pumpkins are plants and the fact that a pumpkin is alive and speaks is very fantastical. The second example of new and different characters is Wybie Lovat. He is a new character that is in the movie but not the book. He adds more fantasy because he finds a doll that looks Just like Coraline and gives it to her. The new and different haracters is the second detail that makes Coraline the movie have more elements of Fantasy. The third detail that makes Coraline the movie have more elements of Fantasy is sound. The sound from the movie can let you hear the characters tone of voice while speaking which lets you know if what they are saying sounds fantastical. The second thing is that you can hear background sounds and noise. This adds to Fantasy because it lets you hear strange sounds in the background that make it more fantastical. The third thing is that in the movie you can hear how loud the character is speaking. This can let you know how the character feels which adds on to the fantastical elements. I have now expressed my opinion on which to use to teach the Fantasy genre. Coraline the movie has many elements and examples of Fantasy. Coraline the movie should be used in schools to teach the Fantasy genre because the sounds, animations, and new or different characters all show more elements and examples of the Fantasy genre than in the book. Now that you have taken a look at many examples and elements of Fantasy in the movie, I hope that you consider using Coraline the movie to teach Fantasy in schools.

Theme Essay Young Goodman Brown :: Free Essay Writer

Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã¢â‚¬Å"Young Goodman Brown†, by Nathaniel Hawthorne, delves into the classic battle between good and evil; taking the protagonist, Goodman Brown, on a journey to test the resolve of his faith. Goodman ventures out on his expedition deep into the sinister forest, in order to repudiate the attempt of the devil to sway him from Christianity; a test he believes his devout faith is prepared to confront. Goodman Brown is forever altered in ways unforeseeable by taking a stroll with the ultimate antagonist, the devil himself. The prevailing theme in this literary work, which is common in Hawthorne’s gothic writing, is the realization that evil can infect people who seem perfectly respectable. Throughout the course of his journey, Goodman Brown discovers that even highly reputable people of Salem are vulnerable to the forces of darkness.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Goodman Brown embarks on his journey into the forest with the fervent belief that his potent dedication is indomitably ironclad, and thus will be able to overcome even the most tempting persuasions of the devil. As Goodman and the devil continue sauntering along the serpentine path, they encounter Goodman’s old catechism teacher, Goody Cloyse, and it is eventually revealed that she is heading to the satanic occult meeting at the core of the forest. Goodman is absolutely confounded at the sight of her, as he had always considered Cloyse as a moral and spiritual guide in his life. Goody Cloyse’s appearance is the first moment where Goodman begins to question his faith. Brown's illusions about the purity of his society are finally obliterated when he discovers that many of his fellow townspeople, including religious leaders and his wife (aptly named Faith), are attending a Black Mass or â€Å"witch-meeting†. At the end of the story, it is not cle ar whether Brown's experience was a nightmare or biting reality, but the results are nonetheless the same. Brown is unable to forgive the possibility of evil in his loved ones, and as a result spends the rest of his life in desperate loneliness and gloom.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  At the beginning of his journey, Goodman Brown’s will and pride were both embedded in the belief that he was a pious man. Goodman’s pride in piety evidently fails him, as he discovers that his faith was based on the principles of individuals who had sworn allegiance to the devil. This deplorable truth destroyed his conviction, and in this sense the devil prevailed against Goodman Brown. Friendship in the Epic of Gilgamesh Essay -- Character Analysis, Enkid

In the epic of Gilgamesh the friendship between Gilgamesh and Enkidu is very complex and necessary. Their friendship brings animal, human, and god together. Gilgamesh is changed by his friendship with Enkidu. He becomes a better person and a better ruler because of Enkidu. Enkidu’s life is enriched because of his friendship with Gilgamesh. Enkidu was created to balance out Gilgamesh, and he accomplishes this goal. The two men are very close, and love each other deeply. Both Gilgamesh and Enkidu benefit from their friendship. Some of Gilgamesh’s qualities are that he had a â€Å"beauty†¦ surpassing all others† and was â€Å"two thirds†¦ god and one third man† (13). Before Enkidu, Gilgamesh acted horribly. He was a terrible ruler and a terrible man. Gilgamesh was not all good, for example, â€Å"his lust leaves no virgin to her lover, neither the warrior’s daughter nor the wife of the noble†¦Ã¢â‚¬ (13). He was a terrible ruler. Gilgamesh was arrogant, but very powerful in his country. His people had no choice but to listen to him. They were forced to go along with his unlawfulness and stubbornness. Enkidu was created to be Gilgamesh’s equal and his soul mate. ‘â€Å"You made him†¦ now create his equal; let it be as like him as his own reflection, his second self, stormy heart for stormy heart’† (14). So the goddess of creation, Aruru â€Å"dipped her hands in water and pinched off clay, she let it fall in the wilderness† and created Enkidu (14). Before Gilgamesh had met Enkidu he loved him; ‘â€Å"†¦ I bent down, deeply drawn towards†¦ [Enkidu]†¦ I loved it like a woman and wore it at my side†Ã¢â‚¬â„¢ (16). Enkidu had â€Å"virtue in him† (14). He was also â€Å"innocent of mankind† (14). After Enkidu was civilized the wild animals would not be near him. He felt ... ...sh will miss the friendship he had with Enkidu. This is another reason he mourns Enkidu’s death. Both Enkidu and Gilgamesh benefited from their friendship. They each got a friend, and they each gained wisdom. Enkidu gained wisdom in knowing the finer things in life. Gilgamesh gained wisdom in knowing that he would be punished when he died; he wants a second chance at life. Gilgamesh shows Enkidu the finer things, and Enkidu shows Gilgamesh that he will be punished in his death. These are the reasons that their friendship was a good thing. This topic in Gilgamesh is one of the most controversial ones, but Gilgamesh and Enkidu both gained a friend and wisdom that they did not have before. Without this friendship neither would be the changed people they are at the end of their lives. Gilgamesh and Enkidu needed each other, even if they did not know it. Comparing Fast Food Giants Burger King and McDonald’s

Burger King Versus McDonald’s Fast Food Franchises have raised many questions or debates that have risen because of obesity issues and health concerns in our society to this day. This has led me to compare Burger King and McDonald’s. Comparison of these two companies to see exactly what they have to offer and the fact that people seem to look at all fast food the same. It is all bad for you and causing health issues. Burger King and McDonald’s are the top two fast food chains and are known for serving unhealthy foods, but there are healthy choices available, as salads. As I have done my research to see if there are healthy options when we eat at these places. Truly comes down to whether it is us or the franchises making the wrong choices or whose fault it really is. Fast food franchises being all of the same or having differences amongst food options and services offered. Similarities Main thing appears to be a burger, fries, and a soft drink is what they are known for. Both of the franchises basically offer the same types of foods, combo meals, children meals, dollar menus, super sizes available, play lands and a drive thru for that fast service. Usually you can bet the food will taste the same each time you go, giving us the feeling of reliability. Whether you want to sit down as a family or eat on the go. Both of the companies keep the cost down to make it an affordable meal and giving us a variety to choose from. They both serve breakfast, lunch, and supper options. This is partially what makes it hard for us to say no. The convenience and time saving options really hit home to our busy schedules. Differences: Now even though they both seem to be basically the same, there are differences within these two franchises. One way that they are different is in the way they prepare and process their foods. At Burger King, they use a process where there is no human intervention while cooking their burgers. No one has to stand there and flip the burgers. This is saving time and providing employees to be available to keep moving and making meals more quickly. They also use a broiler, giving us that broiler taste. Where McDonald’s uses a basic grill style and someone has to be there constantly to turn and flip the burgers. Burger King has bigger and thicker burgers, providing more for your buck. They also have the option of onion rings instead of fries, and they are lower in calories than fries. When concerning their fries, they even have the option of no salt on them. This is an amazing option for those of us watching our sodium intake. The one thing that I was surprised with is that they provide Kraft macaroni and cheese and apple fries in the children’s meals, along with milk. The fries are still included, but for those parents who do not want them to have the fries, there is your other option. McDonald’s gives you a wider range of choices in desserts and salads. They offer 10 different types of salads, where Burger King only offers you 3 types of salads. Their happy meal is including a choice of low fat chocolate and white milk, fries along with apple slices. If you do not want your child to have fries, there’s the option of two packages of apple slices. They are attempting to offer a healthier choice for your children. Healthier choices If you want just the basic burger, fries, and a beverage, it really does not matter where you go; they both offer these and come down to the consumer’s taste buds. Basically either place you go, they both have begun to offer many healthy food options. It still is not the best choice, but you can choose something that will not cause so much weight gain. It is coming down to our choices on what we eat if we must go to a fast food restaurant. Some of the choices you can make: Have a salad with the dressing on the side, Burger King’s fries with not salt, have the condiments on the side or none, choose a burger with no bacon or cheese, have their oatmeal option with fruit on top, a veggie burger instead of meat, grilled instead of fried and have juice instead of soda. There are many things that we can choose to eat that will make our visit to these two places healthier. Both places provide brochures on the nutritional value on their meals, take time to check them out and see what you are eating. Burger King and McDonald’s are very similar in many ways, but do have differences. Just depending on what your taste buds are, if you want it made your way, or if you want a bigger burger. These will assist in determining to which company fits best to your desires. The salad option, McDonald’s is the way to go. They have best options in this category, but remember to go for the grilled instead of fried and have that dressing on the side. Just remember it is our choice to what we are putting in our body. Use of Pastiche in English Prose

Use of Pastiche in English Prose A text that borrows or imitates the style, words, or ideas of other writers. Unlike a parody, which aims for a comic or satiric effect, a pastiche is often intended as a compliment (or an homage) to the original writer(s)though it may just be a hodgepodge of borrowed words and ideas. Examples and Observations: The pastiche prose form openly mimes the content and mannerisms of another written work. Its a respectful, if often jocular, an homage to the work that inspired it. (Its literary cousin is the parody, but that imitation subtly or savagely satirizes its source material.) The pastiche implicitly says, I appreciate this author, the characters, and the fictive world . . . and my imitation is sincere flattery. The affection for Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and his immortal Sherlock Holmes is evident in August Derleths stories about brilliant, deerstalker-wearing Solar Pons of 7B Praed St.(Mort Castle, Write Like Poe. The Complete Handbook Of Novel Writing, 2nd ed. Writers Digest Books, 2010)The secret mechanism of a pastiche is the fact that a style is not just a unique set of linguistic operations: a style is not just a prose style. A style is also a quality of vision. It is also its subject matter. A pastiche transfers the prose style to a new content (while parody transfers the prose style to an inadmissible and scandalous content): it is, therefore, a way of testing out the limits of a style.(Adam Thirlwell, The Delighted States. Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2007) Parody and Pastiche in The SimpsonsParody attacks a particular text or genre, making fun of how that text or genre operates. Pastiche merely imitates or repeats for mildly ironic amusement, whereas parody is actively critical. For instance, when an episode of The Simpsons loosely follows the plot of Citizen Kane (rendering Mr. Burns as Kane), no real critique is offered of Orson Welless masterpiece, making this pastiche. Yet on a weekly basis, The Simpsons plays with generic conventions of the traditional family sitcom. It also mocks forms of advertising and . . . it occasionally lambastes the form and format of news, all with critical intent, thereby making such instances bona fide parody.(Jonathan Gray, Jeffrey P. Jones, and Ethan Thompson, The State of Satire, the Satire of the State. Satire TV: Politics and Comedy in the Post-Network Era. New York University Press, 2009)Pastiche in Green Days American Idiot (Musical)The sheer volume of the stage band’s music and the frenet ic rush of action provide constant energy. But tunes recalling the 1950s pastiche of The Rocky Horror Picture Show or, during We’re Coming Home Again, the Phil Spectoresque Springsteen of Born to Run, have few punk credentials. The indulgent-youths versus dutiful-wives combat of Too Much Too Soon also shows how much [Bilie Joe] Armstrong’s characters are [Jack] Kerouac boys and girls at base, American idiots and ennui unchanged.(Nick Hasted, Green Day’s American Idiot, Hammersmith Apollo, London. The Independent, December 5, 2012) Pastiche in Peter PanThe apparent contradiction whereby war converts into a game is weirdly captured in Baden-Powells favorite play, J.M. Barries Peter Pan (1904), which he saw many times in the years he was gestating Scouting for Boys. In the Neverland of the play, Peters boys, the pirates, and the Indians relentlessly track after one another in a literal vicious circle that, though it is on one level all burlesque, an excessive late Imperial pastiche of the commonplaces of childrens fiction, is also deadly seriousas the final carnage on Captain Hooks ship vividly dramatizes.(Elleke Boehmer, introduction to Scouting for Boys: A Handbook for Instruction in Good Citizenship by Robert Baden-Powell, 1908; Rpt. 2004)Samuel Becketts Use of Pastiche[Samuel] Becketts cutting and pasting his reading onto his own stock of prose produced a discourse that Giles Deleuze might call rhizomatic or a technique Frederic Jameson might call pastiche. That is, these early works are finally assemblages, intertextual layerings, palimpsests, the effect of which is to produce (if not reproduce) a multiplicity of meanings in a manner that will come to be thought Postmodern in the second half of the twentieth century. . . .Postmodern pastiche would suggest that the only style possible in contemporary culture is travesty or mimicry of past stylesquite the opposite of what Beckett was developing. Intertext or assemblage or pastiche allowed Beckett to assault the idea of style and so (or thereby) develop his own . . ..(S.E. Gontarski, Style and the Man: Samuel Beckett and the Art of Pastiche. Samuel Beckett Today: Pastiches, Parodies Other Imitations, ed. by Marius Buning, Matthijs Engelberts, and Sjef Houppermans. Rodopi, 2002) Fredric Jameson on PasticheHence, once again, pastiche: in a world in which stylistic innovation is no longer possible, all that is left is to imitate dead styles, to speak through the masks and with the voices of the styles in the imaginary museum. But this means that contemporary or postmodernist art is going to be about art itself in a new kind of way; even more, it means that one of its essential messages will involve the necessary failure of art and the aesthetic, the failure of the new, the imprisonment in the past.(Fredric Jameson, Postmodernism and Consumer Society. The Cultural Turn: Selected Writings on the Postmodern, 1983-1998. Verso, 1998)
